Did You Know? Dad Doesn’t Have to Feed Baby to Bond!

It’s 2025—so why are we still pushing the outdated idea that dad (or grandma) can only bond with baby through bottle-feeding? The truth is, there are so many ways for dads, grandparents, and loved ones to build a strong bond with a baby—without needing to feed them.

Bonding isn’t about the bottle—it’s about connection. Babies thrive on love, touch, and interaction, and there are countless ways to build a close relationship that don’t involve feeding.

💡 That said—if you’re already pumping or using formula, having dad take over some feedings is a great way for him to bond while giving mom a much-needed break. Just know that it’s not necessary to introduce a bottle solely for the purpose of bonding.

Mom’s breastfeeding journey with baby is a unique, irreplaceable connection. The fact that it’s something only she can do makes it even more special. That doesn’t mean dad or other caregivers can’t have their own meaningful ways to bond!

Ways Dad (or Grandma) Can Bond with Baby

🌙 Nighttime Diaper Changes & Soothing

💡 Why it helps: While mom rests, dad (or another caregiver) can take over diaper changes and middle-of-the-night snuggles. This builds trust and comfort as baby learns they can depend on dad for care.

💡 Bonus: It also gives mom more sleep, which is essential for postpartum recovery!

😴 Contact Naps & Skin-to-Skin Time

💡 Why it helps: Babies crave warmth and security. Resting on dad’s chest or having skin-to-skin contact helps regulate baby’s breathing, temperature, and heartbeat—all while releasing oxytocin (the love hormone!) for both dad and baby.

💡 Bonus: This is a great way to soothe a fussy baby while giving mom time to shower, eat, or take a well-earned break.

👶 Babywearing (SSC, Wraps, Slings)

💡 Why it helps: Nothing beats being close to a caregiver’s heartbeat. Dad or grandma can wear baby in a soft-structured carrier (Tula Free to Grow is a personal favorite! *not affiliated ), a wrap, or a sling. This promotes security, reduces crying, and strengthens emotional bonds.

💡 Bonus: Hands-free bonding! Dad can still get things done while baby naps against his chest.

🌿 Nature Walks & Outdoor Adventures

💡 Why it helps: Fresh air, movement, and nature sounds help regulate baby’s nervous system. Taking baby for a walk in the stroller, baby carrier, or even a wagon creates a sense of calm and relaxation while offering new sensory experiences.

💡 Bonus: Dads love adventure! Walking outside gives them a chance to explore with baby while giving mom some alone time.

🛒 Grocery Runs & Shopping Trips

💡 Why it helps: Running errands may seem simple, but babies love being out in the world. Whether in a stroller, baby carrier, or just in dad’s arms, these outings provide bonding time, new sights and sounds, and opportunities for social interaction.

💡 Bonus: It also helps build dad’s confidence in caring for baby solo!

🎶 Singing, Talking & Reading

💡 Why it helps: Babies don’t care how good your singing voice is—they just love hearing it! Talking, reading, and singing all help baby develop language skills and strengthen emotional connection.

💡 Bonus: Reading together creates a calming bedtime routine and a love for books early on.

🛁 Bathtime Fun

💡 Why it helps: Bathtime is a great sensory experience and a special way to wind down before bed. Dad or grandma can take over bathtime to make it a special bonding ritual.

💡 Bonus: Water play encourages development and is soothing for baby!

Why This Matters

🍼 Feeding is just one part of bonding—but it’s not the only way. Babies don’t need a bottle from dad to form a deep, loving connection. They need touch, attention, and presence.

💡 Encouraging these bonding moments gives dad (or grandma) confidence in their role while also giving mom some much-needed rest.

So let’s move past the old “bottle = bonding” myth and celebrate all the ways dads and loved ones can nurture a beautiful connection with baby!
