FAQ
Cloth Menstrual Pads - Use and Care
First- Please Prep your Pads BEFORE use. Just toss them in with a regular load of laundry and through the dryer 2-3 times to help the Natural Fibers reach optimum absorbency. (Do NOT use fabric softener of any kind in ether the washer or dryer with your Cloth Pads. Fabric softeners build up in the fibers of fabric and cause repelling over time.)
Second- Snap your Pad into your Well Fitted, Cotton or similar underwear. Make sure the leg gussets are not all stretched out and that you are not using silky or lacy underwear as that can cause slipping issues. (Or do. Go ahead and live dangerously. The Fleece of the backer fabric does provide a small amount of grip to your underwear.)
Third- Enjoy going about your day as usual.
Forth- Remove used Pad and store in a wet bag, or regular open air laundry basket (Don’t worry about smell! It’s the blood mixed with the chemicals of disposable menstrual products that causes that ...smell... associated with menstrual cycles. Not the blood itself. Most blood has an almost unnoticeable iron scent.)
Fifth- Wash Day. There are so many ways to wash your cloth pads. My personal method is to open them all up, make sure none of them are stuck together or folded in half and stuck to themselves. Run the pads alone on a Quick Wash Cycle with half the usual laundry detergent. You can also add your stain treatment products at this point if you want, like oxyclean or peroxide. After the quick wash check for any stains that need a little more attention (not necessary since stains do not mean your pads are dirty but if it bothers you then now is the time to give them a scrub. Unless you are sunning them then you can just toss them into a sunny spot later instead of the dryer.) Next Bulk your washer with a regular load of laundry ( I wouldn’t use anything bigger then a t-shirt as they tend to get wrapped up in towels etc.) and wash on a Normal Wash Cycle. Temperature doesn’t seem to matter so just whatever you usual wash your laundry with.
Sixth- Toss in the Dryer or hang dry. Doesn’t matter. Though if you need them again right away then definitely toss them in the dryer as they tend to take a longer time to air dry. If you are Sunning them to remove stains make sure they are nice and damp before laying them out in a sunny spot. You can also put a little lemon juice on the stain to help get it out if its really in there. If you do add lemon juice you will want to run it through the wash again before using. *** I do NOT know what effect Lemon Juice will have on the print/pattern of the fabric. It could cause fading.***
Do Not use Fabric Softener in the Washer or Dryer with your Cloth Pads.

Environmental Sustainability and Health & Safety FAQ - Spoonflower Fabrics/Dye
▶Are hazardous chemicals found in your products or used during the printing process?
None of our substrates contain Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAs). All have passed tests confirming there are no harmful chemicals such as formaldehyde and lead present, and we avoid printing on fabrics with any flame-retardant applications.
None of our fabric and paper substrates contain Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs). Although VOCs (i.e. benzene, ethylene glycol, formaldehyde, and toluene) can be found in adhesives and printing inks, we do not use any of these materials at Spoonflower.
▶What chemicals might be found in the inks that you print with, or in your other product parts not created by the factory?
We print using 100% water-based inks, free of heavy metals, formaldehyde and APE. They are non-hazardous, non-toxic and biodegradable. The inks used for our wallpapers are GREENGuard Gold Certified, an industry standard for low chemical emissions. Our products and inks are Proposition 65 compliant.
Our pillows have been tested for chemical compounds and no warning for Prop 65 is necessary.
▶Are the inks you use safe for children and pets?
Spoonflower inks have been tested to ensure that they contain none of the substances prohibited by the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA) and are safe for infant and pet use. However, because our fabrics have not been treated with fire retardant chemicals, they are not suitable for use in children's sleepwear or bedding.
Important note: Please remember that finished products in their entirety also need to be individually tested for CPSIA compliance if you intend to sell children’s items to the public.
US Consumer Product Safety Commission. Updated on 3/19/2012 - Dharma Trading Co. (Fabric Dyes)
DYES
Our Fiber Reactive "Procion" Dyes, to the best of our knowledge, do not contain any lead. The SDS
(Safety Data Sheets) do not indicate the presence of any lead. Our
manufacturer has told us that if lead is not listed on an SDS, it means
that if it is even present at all, it would be way under 100 ppm and
more like a few ppb (parts per billion!). The CPSC has now made dyed
fabrics exempt anyway. The really important thing to feel assured about
is that once you have dyed something with Fiber Reactive dye, the dye is
permanently bonded and does not come off, which actually makes it extra
safe for children's clothing over other dyes.
Some of our other dyes already have the Non-Toxic certification which
would indicate they are lead-free or also have such low levels that
they are in total compliance with the new law. This is shown on the
label, in the catalog, and on our web-site. NONE of the SDS
for ANY of our dyes indicate the presence of lead with the exception of
one as mentioned above, black Jacquard brand Acid Dye for wool &
silk. As we find more out about the dyes, we will post it here.
