Can You Detox While Breastfeeding?

When it comes to detoxing while breastfeeding, the opinions are often black and white:
🚫 “Absolutely not! It’s dangerous.”
🚫 “You could pass toxins to your baby.”
🚫 “It’s safer to wait until you’re done nursing.”
But what about moms who nurse for years—through multiple pregnancies or until their babies self-wean? What about the mothers who feel their bodies falling apart while still having to be a source of life and nourishment?
As a mom who breastfed for 7 years straight, through two pregnancies and tandem nursing, my perspective is simple:
💡 You can’t pour from an empty cup.
💡 You can’t sustain life if your own body is breaking down.
My Detox Journey While Breastfeeding
When I First Started Detoxing (2015)
In 2015, I was in the early stages of "not not trying" for my second pregnancy when I realized I needed to take care of myself first. I knew detoxing was important, but I also wanted to be safe and intentional about it.
So, I started by gently supporting my detox pathways:
✔ Foot soaks – Pulling out toxins through the feet.
✔ Armpit masks – Helping clear lymphatic congestion.
✔ Liver support tinctures – Supporting my liver for natural detoxification.
✔ Weekly chiropractic care – Ensuring my body was aligned and my nervous system functioned properly.
✔ Intermittent fasting – I ate my last meal between 6-6:30 PM and didn’t eat again until 10:30-11 AM the next day.
✔ Diet changes – I removed gluten, avoided sugar and processed foods, and stayed dairy-free due to an allergy. (I’ll be honest—diet is the hardest part for me!)
💡 The Result? I started feeling so much better! My pregnancy with my second child was smooth, and my breastfeeding journey was unaffected. My firstborn and my second baby never showed signs of being “poisoned” by my detoxing body.
When I Needed to Detox Again (2021)
Fast forward to 2021—my third baby was a year old, and I had stayed consistent with my detox habits.
BUT… I started falling apart again.
💔 Postpartum depression hit hard.
💔 My energy was gone.
💔 My body felt depleted.
That’s when I leveled up my detox regimen:
