Could Parasites Be Causing Your Hair Loss? Let’s Talk About It.
Hey love, I know you’ve been struggling with your hair loss, and I just want to say—I see you. I know how frustrating and heartbreaking it can be to watch your hair thin or fall out, especially when doctors don’t have solid answers. You’ve probably heard that alopecia is an autoimmune issue or maybe genetic, but can we talk about something no one seems to mention?
Parasites.
I know, I know—it sounds wild. But hear me out.
When Pets Lose Their Fur, Vets Look at Parasites First
If your pet started losing fur, the vet wouldn’t just shrug and say, “Oh, it must be genetic. Nothing we can do.” Nope. They’d immediately check for mites, fleas, or other parasites. If they found something, they’d treat it, and in many cases, the fur would grow back.
So why don’t we do the same for humans? Why isn’t this one of the first things we look at when someone starts losing their hair?
Could Parasites Be Messing With Your Hair?
Now, I’m not saying that every case of alopecia is caused by parasites, but there’s some interesting evidence connecting them.
• Gut Parasites & Autoimmune Responses: Some studies have linked gut parasites like Blastocystis hominis and Dientamoeba fragilis to autoimmune issues, including alopecia areata. Your immune system might be fighting an infection, but instead of just targeting the parasite, it starts attacking your hair follicles too. (Study on gut parasites & autoimmune disease)
• Histamine Overload & Hair Loss: Some parasites cause histamine intolerance, which can lead to inflammation, itching, and—you guessed it—hair loss. If you also struggle with rashes, bloating, or weird food sensitivities, this might be worth looking into.
• Scalp Demodex Mites: There are tiny mites that naturally live on everyone’s skin, but sometimes they overpopulate, especially if your immune system is out of balance. Too many of them can lead to inflammation, itching, and—you guessed it again—hair loss.
What Can You Do?
First off, I’m not saying to ditch your doctor’s advice. But I am saying that maybe it’s time to start asking different questions. If parasites could be playing a role in your hair loss, why not look into it?
Here are a few things you could consider:
✔ A gentle parasite cleanse – This doesn’t have to mean crazy detoxes or starvation diets. Just incorporating natural antiparasitics like black walnut hull, wormwood, clove, and even pumpkin seeds into your routine can help.
✔ Supporting your gut health – A strong gut helps keep parasites in check. Probiotics, fermented foods, and a low-inflammatory diet might make a huge difference.
✔ Getting tested – Some stool tests can check for gut parasites, and a simple skin scraping can identify mites on the scalp. (Sadly, not all doctors will check for this, so you might have to advocate for yourself!)
Let’s Start Asking More Questions
I’m not saying parasites are the answer to alopecia, but I am saying that we should be asking why no one’s looking into it. If vets treat bald pets for parasites, maybe it’s time we start considering that option for ourselves.
No matter what, I want you to know—you are so much more than your hair. But if there’s a chance you could get it back, I want that for you.
Sending you love and hoping this gives you a new path to explore. Let’s figure this out together. 💜
