Natural Treatments for Pink Eye (Conjunctivitis)
Pink eye, or conjunctivitis, is a common and highly contagious eye condition caused by bacteria, viruses, or allergens. Symptoms include redness, itchiness, watery or sticky discharge (yellow or green mucus), crusty eyelids, light sensitivity, and mild swelling. Proper hygiene and natural remedies can help treat pink eye effectively while minimizing discomfort.
Natural Treatments:
• Breastmilk: Apply 1–2 drops in each eye every few hours for its natural antibacterial and soothing properties. Continue for 2–3 days after symptoms disappear.
• Colloidal Silver: Use 1–2 drops in each eye every few hours daily to combat bacteria or viruses. Continue for 2–3 days after symptoms disappear.
• Warm or Cool Compresses: Use a clean, damp cloth to reduce swelling, soothe irritation and remove mucus.
• Herbal Remedies: Chamomile or calendula tea bags (cooled) can be applied as compresses to calm inflammation. You can also brew a strong tea and soak a small cloth to use as a compress.
• Castor Oil Drops: Add a few drops of castor oil at night to rehydrate and soothe irritated eyes. Drops can be added directly in eyes and/or rubbed over and around eyelids.
Hygiene Tips to Prevent Spread:
• Always treat both eyes, even if only one shows symptoms, to prevent reinfection.
• Wash pillowcases, blankets, towels, stuffed animals and anything that touches the face daily.
• Avoid touching or rubbing the eyes, and wash hands immediately after caring for the eyes.
• Do not share personal items like towels, washcloths, or makeup during treatment.
Natural remedies combined with strict hygiene practices can effectively support the healing process while preventing the spread of pink eye. If symptoms persist or worsen, consult a healthcare professional.
Kids like to touch everything in their path and ether put it in their mouth, or immediately rub their eyes.
It’s never too early to teach proper hand washing and to be aware of our surroundings and the things we touch.
Teach children to try to remember to keep hands off of faces while out and about.
